Title: VPN Connection Error
Post by: jdlsc on December 05, 2003, 05:02:56 PM
I am having trouble connecting to my SME 5.6 server via VPN.  I have the # of PPTP clients set to 4 and I know that I am the only one trying to connect.  I can connect via my local LAN IP address, so I know it is working to some extent, but when I try to connect via the External WAN IP address, I get the folowing error:  Error 781: The encryption attempt failed because no valid certificate was found.

Any ideas on where to begin to fix this?

I am Linux beginner, please forgive me if this is pretty basic.  Thanks!

...but do you have PPTP turned on for the individual user?  That was my problem.

Try google, which gave these search results

http://www.google.com.au/search?q=Error+781%3A+The+encryption+attempt+failed+because+no+valid+certificate+was+found.&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

then for example
http://www.cryer.co.uk/brian/windows/trbl_w2k_teafbnvc781.htm
or
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q247/2/31.asp&NoWebContent=1

On v5.6 all users automatically had VPN access rights.

At a guess your Win VPN client may not be configured correctly ??

Can you ping your server from the remote location ?
