Title: Can't Browse Sites - Help Appreciated!
Post by: Trevor on December 19, 2003, 11:56:10 PM
general question to other SME 6.0 b3 & final users...

After upgrading to 6.0b3 / then to 6.0 final I've had problems browsing to a lot of different sites (www.google.com, news.google.com, www.cnn.com, contribs.org, etc). Basically, my win2k desktop browsers report that they can't resolve hostnames. If I wait anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes and try the site again it comes up fine, usually.

I'm having a difficult time tracking down what is causing this behavior.
When I can't get to a site from my desktop or laptop I promptly login to my server and (ping, dig, traceroute) the site from my SME server... no issues.

I've looked at logs on my SME server (squid, messages, access, etc) and none report anything that I can track back to the problems I'm experiencing. I only started having these issues after upgrading my SME server from 5.0 to 6.0b3. No other changes have been made to my internal network configurations other than the SME upgrade.

My setup consists of a couple internal win2k boxes and laptops. All running win2k sp4 (all updates) and all are experiencing the same problems as my desktop using any web browser (Firebird by default).

The other possibility is my ISP (Road Runner) has made changes but since I can't replicate the problem from my SME server I don't think these a problem there.

My SME server is setup as gateway/webserver & runs dual NICs (one internal, one external). One thing I have noticed that I can't explain is my external NIC is reporting RX errors (RX packets:50689708 errors:209 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0). Again, I don't feel this is related b/c I never have issues getting to my server/websites externally. ???

Anyone else having these issues? Suggestions on troubleshooting or possible causes are very welcome. :-)

Thnx

The same happen to me when I first turn on a SME box at home. NOT A WORD, have no idea of what happened, just reboot it when I get the problem, and ......guess what....it's gone for a while.......
Sorry for not giving you a solution but I though you might want to know that you're not the only with that problem......
Cheers.....

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I've experienced the same with rebooting, it helps for a while.

FYI...

Disabling the squid service using the "Services" web panel rmp (referenced here: http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=5054.msg17754#msg17754 ) my hostname resolution issues have quit. I'm assuming the problem I'm experiencing with this are related to a bug in squid or either in it's configuration.

It's only to enforce the declarations. In my SME box happens the same, the cure is to reboot the machine and.. voila.. another 2, 3, or maybe more happy days.
