Title: Couldn't get aliases to work
Post by: Benjamin on December 29, 2003, 05:11:49 AM
Hi there I am new to this. I've just installed SME5.6 release but unable to get mail aliases to work. Hve tried sending mail to user@domain.com this is ok but when sent as user.name@domain it doesn't work. Have I missed out anything?

If you create a user in your server-manager for example:
(ffrog)  then enter the full name Fred Frog you will be able by default
to send email to ffrog@domain.com; fred.frog@domain.com ;and fred_frog@domain.com

You can then go into the pseudonyms panel and create other aliases for domain.com
and have them point to the (ffrog) account

You should also instal the latest updates for v5.6 as there have been quite a few security fixes since the original release.

Not sure I understand completely but  if "def.domain.com" is a sub-domain, I think it has to be added in the Hostnames and addresses section in your server-manager.
Add the new host name 'def" and the domain would be domain.com
I think that is how it works.

Ok Let's start over
Where does abc.def come from?
Ypu said abc is the user
What is the full user name? abc (1st) def (last)?
Or did you create a Pseudonym?
When I create the Pseudonym abc.def (pointing to admin)and send an external email to abc.def@mydomain.com , it come to me ok?
I am running SME 5.5 but 5.6 should function the same??

Happy 2004 to you as well.

This was a strange problem. I made a test with my e-smith 5.6 making an mail account equivalent arne.test@mydomain.org. Mail sent to this mail equivalent from Hotmail had no problem to reach the post account it is pointing to. So it is true that you are free to edit your mail equivalents as you want at the e-smith 5.6

I really don't know why it shouldent work on a 6.0 version, but I believe one place to start looking wold be at the dns server arrangement, whether you use en external or an internal dns server.

Hi Arne

Ben seems to be using SME 5.6 as well so your test proves that he should be able
to send to his aliases the same way you do.

I agree this is an good avenue to explorer.

If you login to a shell account on the smiffy box and type

echo "Test shell mail" | mail benjamin.foo@web-fame.com -s test

this will try and send a mail to the account.

With regards to the mail not bouncing back, check the admin mail box, see if it went there. It will also be worth checking the mail logs via the server manager.
