Up until recently I only used my SME server as a secondary mail server. Now I am setting it up for VPN access I would like to add more users.
Trouble I have is that while I can create users, every time I try to reset their password using the server manager I am told "An error occurred while updating the password". The account appears to be unlocked, If I try to SSH into the box using the password I just set I can log in (OK, just to be told that shell access is not available etc, but it suggests the password is OK). But despite the VPN access being on in the provile I cannot get in via VPN unless I use the admin account.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
(I am using ver6b3 updated from 5.5 - I have pointed webmail at another server so cannot test that way, but could point it back at the SME server if needed)

SME 6 lets you turn VPN on and off for each user account.
Have you turned on VPN access for each individaul account?

Yup. VPN is switched on for the relevant accounts.
Solved the password problem - I have manually adjusted the Wins server in the templates to point to my Win2K server, then forgotten to put it back in quotes.
How am I supposed to enter the username when logging in to the VPN remotely?
When I log in as admin I just use "admin" and it is fine.
When I log in as other user I use "user" and the /var/log/messages tells me
"CHAP peer authentication failed for user"
When I log in as "user@domain.com" the message changes to
"No CHAP secret found for authenticating user@domain.com"
"CHAP peer authentication failed for user@domain.com"
Thanks again.

Rob -- trying resetting the password for the user (the same password will do). You will then see an entry created in /etc/samba/smbpasswd if it wasn't there before.
That worked for me.
I did a clean 6.0 install and then a restore from 5.6. Everything worked fine except for PPTP.

Hmm....
I know I did that, but probably not since the upgrade to 6.0
Am off to a trade show in the morning, but will give it a try on my return (having had some sucess with adding a backup tape I may also try your other suggestion re a backup and fresh install)
Cheers again! (and to Paul)
