Title: Still no mailing list or new fixes?
Post by: Bill on January 14, 2004, 05:29:05 PM
I am very disappointed to see that over a month after the switch from Mitel to here that there still is no support for a mailing list. No fixes for recently discovered holes either.  This product appears to be dead and barely twitching. This used to be the best free server but its now time to obsolete the beast and upgrade to a new one. Any suggestions on a good replacement server? (No swearing/bashing please)

Well I think it is a bit premature to say the project is dead but I had the same concerns and have looked around.

This looks like a good alternative. In many ways they are way ahead of SME but they are behind in a few as well. No login scripts for nt/xp domain or groups. That is a big thing if you are setting up offices with 10 to 50+ people. It is also based on RedHat and the future of redhat is still a wait and se what happens.

Here are a few others

I think we will have a good idea what will happen with SME in another month.
There could also be a few unexpected things if we are lucky. Wouldn’t it be cool if Dungog Networks released there version of SME with all the updates in one ISO. They have filled in many of the short fallings of mitels SME.

Yes that would be nice, and worth the money!

Only a month! That's barely time to get organised, let alone set up mailing lists and start banging out patches.

In the meantime, the existing servers out there are still rock solid and running fine, as they have done for years. So what has changed to make you want to suddenly switch to a new server? I would have thought you could take your time and stretch it out...

Where is HUGE work is being done behind the scene in preparation to lunch the renewed site with many concerns addressed. Just a bit more patience and it will be rewarded soon. Stay turned. Better yet, roll up your sleeves and help it to happen even sooner.

Well I agree there does not appear to be a link on the contribs.org home page. Perhaps someone at contribs.org could fix that.

Log on to
contribs.org
every now and then, and read the announcements to keep up to date with what's going on.

This recent announcement mentioned the list location
http://wiki.contribs.org/index.php?module=announce&ANN_user_op=view&ANN_id=63

and I think earlier posts on the devinfo list also referred to it.

Perhaps you should also subscribe to or read the devinfo list.

For people not paying for a product, but still expecting something that is still going through a transitional period is pretty lame.  Red Hat discontinued their product because of people like this.  Red Hat had a decent product & provided it and updates for free.  There were several companies that were using this free product and making their own changes to it and calling it something else (Clarkconnect, IPCop, SME, etc...).  I dont blame Red Hat for putting their product aside for enterprise software, where they can get paid might I add.  As for the change over from Mitel to contribs.org, that was pretty nice of them.  They could have pulled everthing and told everyone to take a flying leap, but they didn't and I respect them for that.  There are a lot of things that are going on in the background and it will be sometime before everything is smoothed out and running up to speed.  People want this and that, but the contribs.org group is trying to do what it thinks is best for eveyone.  SME was handed to them and they are doing their best to make available to everyone.  Everyone just needs to be patient.  Older versions are running just fine and will continue to.  Instead of complaining about the problems, how about trying to help with a solution.  Get involved, try to learn about the software.  Report bugs, but try to find the answer to the problem as well.  Don't just sit behind the screen and wait for someone else to fix it.  If everyone did this, things could get fixed faster and this software would be a better product.

Just my two cents.
If I offended anyone, too bad.  This is how it is and they can live with it or get something else.
