Title: File and Printer sharing
Post by: Doug Philip on September 21, 2000, 08:44:42 PM
I'm using e-smith 4.0 as a gateway for two Windows clients to connect to the internet via cable modem. The cable provider does not recommend enabling file and printer sharing on a Windows machine when connected to the cable system. But, is it safe to do if both Windows machines are behind an e-smith box?
My configuration is:

Cable modem --> eth1 on e-smith,
eth0 on e-smith --> hub,
hub --> Windows boxes.

Thanks
Doug

If your window(s) boxes or hub were connected directly to your cable modem, this would essentially make those shared files and printers available to the world at large - and certainly you don't want that.

Safe and secure.  Welcome to the wonderful world of e-smith :)

Doug,
Paul Nesbit is not making an e-smith marketing statement - HE IS RIGHT ON THE MONEY.
You have no idea the number of cable users running with Win98 file sharing turned
on, AND drive directories shared. No one who understands the danger would place a Win9x machine on cable or dsl without a proxy machine.

We do the same configuration with our DSL service:
DSL --> Eth1 on e-smith --> Eth0  on esmith --> 10/100 hub and local lan.
Smart move!
