Title: how does yi.org update work and when?

how is yi.org sent my ip address? and when?
is it a perl script? or shell script?

is it automatically sent on start up? when my ip changes? or does it have to be (or can it be) manually initiated?

appendix 2 of the manual is very general and says it is built in but not how it works.

ok i looked around and found a perl script called
S85update-dns

i opened it with pico and it looks like the right script

so i did perl S85update-dns

and didn't get any errors

waited about 10 minutes and then checked yi.org to see if my ip was updated.

didn't work, it is the same ip from the last time i manually updated it.

i will keep digging

found out that $service=off, looked in /home/e-smith/configuration and dynDNsservice=off, so it looks like dynamic dns is turned off although i ran the console setup entered my account and password, but it didn't "turn on"

do i set this to ="on" or the service name, maybe "yi.org"?

All of the above :-)

A perl script calls a shell script which uses the text mode browser lynx to send the IP data to the yi web site.

It will be automatically sent when your IP changes.

If you run through the console start to finish, you need to choose "www.yi.org (free service)" from the menu - but I remember now that you are using PPPoE, so you don't see that menu - e-smith currently only supports Dynamic DNS for dedicated connections, and PPPoE is considered a dialup connection.

OK, try:

/sbin/e-smith/config set DynDnsService yi
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event console-save

That should fix it for you.

yes that seems to have worked, however i had a seperate problem, the password assigned to me by yi.org had some unusual characters (. and ; ) this didn't work, i don't think they were being passed between scripts correctly, so i changed my password to only letters and it worked!

like you said, when i switched from dial up back to static for PPPoE, it kept the user name and password but turned off DynDnsService

I also found that my YI.ORG account wasn't updated. I followed someones instruction on forcing my update to YI and within a few minutes my domain was up and running.

On a side note. I have to say this whole e-smith server is WELL DONE. The more I play with it the more I'm amazed at how well everything works. Well done E-Smith.
