On v4 final, I have noticed the following message in /var/log/messages:
e-smith[10263]: Can't exec "/var/qmail/bin/qmailq": No such file or directory at /etc/e-smith/events/ip-up/S20email-ipup line 38.
There is no such file, only a qmail-queue. Should this line be pointing to
this file ?
On the same server the Tel line seems to bounce quite a few times before eventually
stopping with a ppp line discipline registered.
The line is then quiet until the next call, when the persistent dial-disconnect process starts again.
The line that seems to repeatedly trigger the calls is
e-smith[10263]: Running event handler: /etc/e-smith/events/ip-up/S20email-ipup

see http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=9574.msg36401#msg36401
for the answer to this. Its a known issue and will be fixed in the next release.

Is there any reason for the modem to persistently keep dialing
and disconecting ?
It is not network traffic that is causing this.
From what I can see in the log, the server keeps re-executing
Running event handler: /etc/e-smith/events/ip-up/S20email-ipup
Until it eventually quietens down after half an hour or so.
