Hi All

I have just read a couple of articvles on here on the subject of open mail relay but I cannot see the answer I am looking for.

I have a couple of clients who connect to the internet using BT and bt will not allow them to relay their mail@domain.com mail through the BT SMTP server.  I would like to allow them to relay this mail through my server following authentication.

Can this be done, I do not want to open this to the world but just to a couple of authenticated users

You can do it.  The secure mail how-to is here: http://www.pagefault.org/code/e-smith.shtml#securemail

Tell them to hassle BT. BT *can* allow this if they wish, but they do *not* allow it by default. They may charge extra for allowing non-btinternet domains in outgoing e-mail. It was about £10 a month for the 'facility' to send from other named (i.e. agreed in advance) domains when I last looked.

BT did this with the pretence that it stops people sending SPAM. It actually seems more like a method to extort more dosh from its customers.

It is one good reason to dump BT though. There are other good reasons too.

BTW - this problem has nothing to do with 'open relays'. It is just BT being awkward.
