I'm using e-smith as server and gateway since version 4. I went through dialup, rogers cable and dsl with eol.ca Recently I moved and switched to cogeco cable. At once my internet become 10 to 20 times slower. Working directly- without the gateway the speed was like suposed to be (~200KBs). Having only the gateway connected I checked the external port with tcpdump and saw a lot of trafic. Mostly it was like requests asking something like "who-is.." or "where-is.." Maybe I'm not right but I asumed the server (P133) is overloaded and this is the reason to be so slow. I didn't know what to do so I took a $60 router and put it between the cable modem and the e-smith server and configured the e-smith as 'server only'. The speed become normal again. I maped all needed ports of the router and now ftp and web servers are working fine but for some reason the mail server will not work.
Did somebody have similar problems with cogeco ?
Any suggestions how to fix the e-smith server so I dont need the additional router?
