Hi All,
I'm a relative newbie to e-smith and linux and have been experimenting with e-smith as a file and mail server. What I'm trying to do is unravel are the mysteries of how e-smith schedules mail delivery and collection so that I can replace my existing NT based setup.
At the moment I'm using VPOP3 mailserver on NT workstation. Mail delivery and collection is scheduled for every 30mins via an ISDN router. At scheduled times mail is both collected and delivered, as happens with e-smith. The difference appears to be that I can force VPOP to collect waiting mail by sending a mail message with priority set to high by the mail client, whereas mail collection with e-smith appears only to happen at the scheduled times.
Also the default for e-smith seems to be to send new mail immediately whatever the mail priority, thus incurring extra dialup costs and tying up the outgoing line. It seems to be the worst of both worlds, you get immediate mail delivery, but don't get collection of mail at the same time.
I may have figured the e-smith defaults wrongly, but I have tested extensively and it seems to me that the defaults I have with VPOP are more user friendly.
I know that I can force fetchmail to collect mail if I telnet to the e-smith box and log on as root, but what I would like to know is how to set up e-smith to queue mail until the scheduled connect times unless messages are sent high priority and to force fetchmail to collect every time a message is sent.
Any assistance would be gratefully recieved as I really would like to ditch NT ASAP
