RTL8180 WLAN card issues
« on: April 12, 2004, 08:52:25 AM »
Hi there
I recently bought a cheap RTL8180 based WLAN card which advertised that it had RedHat Linux support. It had a driver which needed to be compiled, which version 6 can do, after a bit of encouragement.

But, it still won't work. in fact, it hangs the system with remarkable regularity.

Anyone had any experience getting one of these to work? Is it easier to just buy one of those wireless access points and solve the problem by throwing money at it?

Did you get a reply or resolution?

I just picked up one of these cards and subsequently discovered that it's "compile a module" job. Bummer!

Did you get a successful resolution of your problems with it?

Looking around, I see plenty of people having problems with a straight compilation of this module. I also see plenty of esoteric stuff that I don't understand about priv_part.o.

I am looking aorund for help on it and will post the solution here if I get to a successful solution.

Must say I'm looking forward to moving away from having to buy Cisco 350 PCI cards every time I want a server with stable modules already available...

I didn't resolve the issue: just used the card in a Windows machine, and bought a cheap AP instead, and hung it off the internal ethernet port of the server: not the most elegant solution, but the AP cost only $20 more than the card, and has better range...

I think the 'priv_part.o' is either the proprietry firmware for the card or a part of some RSA-type encryption for the signal...

I'm having similar issues getting an Intel 2100b card working in a laptop: it looks like universal wireless support has a little ways to go with Linux, especially the sort that requires compilation...

This is one for the backburner I think...

OK, thanks the update.

If I get to a solution, I will post it here.

If anyone else has got one of these things working on smeserver (or any Linux box) please let us know how!

Thanks
