Seperate User Accounts with Virtual Domains and Email
« on: April 19, 2004, 05:22:58 AM »
Hi everybody, here is what I want to do, and hopefully see if it's do-able.

Primary domain is abc.com
Virtual domain is xyz.com

When I bring up the domains from a remote location, it brings up the appropriate websites.  So I know this part I have configured correctly.

I want to be able to setup user accounts and assign them to a specific domain and not both.  i.e.  when I add users in server-manager, it creates mailboxes for that user in all domains, primary and virtual.  Is their a way to assign the user to only a particular domain and not all.  If I have user jdoe and I send to jdoe@abc.com,  and log into abc.com to retrieve email, it comes up which is perfect!  User jdoe can also log into the virtual domain xyz.com and shows his mailbox (identical to the one in abc.com).

I have checked the Users entry screen in server-manager and cannot find a field for the domain the user belongs to.

My ultimate goal is to host several websites/email using virtual domains.  The thing is that I may have more than one jdoe on different domains, and this poses a problem for emails.

By the way, I am still using version 5.6

Hope you can understand what I want to accomplish.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks :-)

I would love an answer to this question as well.  It seems that e-smith is designed for this but how do you actually do it.

Repeat of question:
How do you set up a user so that they are only associated with a particular domain and its related ibay?

Using 9.01

I would suggest getting the virtual domain email addon from dungog.net.It is about $33.00 U.S. but makes life easier. Also check out his other addons, they will be helpfull for what you are trying to do. I bought the whole set, and have used most of them. I use the clamd-amavis addon but also needed the contrib from http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/. I use the spamassassin from http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/, then the email managment software to deleate the spam after i finished teaching spamassassin. There are addons from dungog I have not set up uet, but that has been due time constraints on my part.

As you are planning on doing this, can i also presume that your users can change their own passwords whilst on the external network? How did you get sme server to do this? I can reach my main webpage from external, and the webmail page, but not the /user-password page.

Many thx,

Phil

The best way you can let them change their own password is to install the user-manager addon. Then they have to connect via vpn, launch their web browser, and point it to your internal ip (http://111.222.333.444/user-manager0. In secure shell, you can allow or dis-allow what you wnat them to have access to. There is no ready way to do it externaly. I would prefer the call me, and I change it for them. After all, I am the admin, and can get into all their stuff anyway.

Phil, have not gotten that far.  I do like crazybob's idea.  Less likely for the user to have problems if you administer passwords.

the very simple answer to this question is to assign particular users to groups.  you would have "abcemployees" group etc.

then in the ibay in server manager you allow access to the ibay for that group only.

simple

Hey Crazy, I checked into dungog.net and they have the solution I need.  I will be purchasing soon.

I tried the i-bay solution with groups and it works great if you want to share files, but I was not able to get it work on the email portion.

Thanks again for the replies everyone.
