I have been a poster on this board for years. I was with E-Smith from the very beginning and have followed and always supported E-Smith and SME Server. I have mostly posted anonymously and sometimes I have actually remembered to use my username. :-o

Rather than using the justification of a few bad apples who wander in and post their drivel in a pathetic attempt to disrupt the forums as a reason to require registration for posters you should be asking the following question.

Have anonymous posters ever contributed in a helpful manner to this forum and its users now or in the past?

If the answer is Yes (and I know it is) than the idea of requiring registration for the privlege of posting here should not be the question you want to ask.

Rather it should be what do you do to fairly control rude posters and once they have posted improperly how to we clean it up?

After all this is called "Contribs.org"...right?

Why is it a problem?
Protecting your privacy? Register with pseudonym and don't provide extra details.
It will just prevent automated pollution of the forums.

Perhaps solving the automated pollution issue could be done in a better way. Update to the forum software, tracking the pollutor and blocking them etc rather than spanking the now and future innocents.
The E-Smith forum never went this direction and I see no reason for this one to go this way either.

One simply has to look to the left side of their monitor screen to see the answer. Currently mine says 2 members and 20 guests. What do you suppose is going to happen to this forum when you make it a members only forum?

Not a-lot. People will still come here and post. It will stop the "Sorry, that last post was me - god dam timeout" posts.

Stop whining. Sign up and get on with it.

It will be the same. Guests are welcome to read and search, but if you asking me a question or expressing your opinion, I’d like to know your name or pseudonym and not confuse you with dozens of other guests.
