SME Updates
« on: September 05, 2004, 12:29:44 PM »
I just had a though!  What does everybody think about setting up a section in the admin web console that looks at a file stored somewhere and tell the admin person what updates are available and give the optin to upgrade them.  I personally would benefit as I find it very hard to keep up-to-date with the changes that occur with SME.

I also don't know much about SME or linux so I am at this point unable to attempt to write any thing that would do this.

I am new to SAIL SME Server v8b6 and have been using SME for many years.
I have already done some research and only ask questions if I still can't work it out.

YUM does what you want nicely.

There are 2 contribs available from dmay and pagefault.org.

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/smeserver/contribs/dmay/smeserver/6.x/beta/yum/

http://www.pagefault.org/download/e-smith/6.0/legacy-utils/i386/

The dmay version has a nice server-manager panel.

As a new user to SME amd linux be careful what repositories you use for up-dates as you can easily break your system with the wrong up-dates. Two good repositories to use are:

contribs.org
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/smeserver/releases/development/RPMS/

pagefault.org
http://www.pagefault.org/download/e-smith/6.0/updates/i386/

There is a lot of help with YUM on this site just do a search and have a read.

Sorry to cut across this topic.  Question: when should one update, and then how to tell which update is essential, and which is not?  I am lost on this score...

If it does not work out of the box, please fill in a Bug Report @ Bugzilla (http://bugs.contribs.org)  - check: http://wiki.contribs.org/Bugzilla_Help .  Thanks.

Does this give you a list of what should be updated?

Yes, it does if you install the version with the server-manager panel you can see the available up-dates and select which you want to install.

Please note that the version with the SM Panel is actually the one from D. May not the one from pagefault.org as previous stated.

Hi Guys,

An 'official' update/upgrade policy will fall in place once the teams are set up. Until then please record all of your findings and pass them on to the teams.

Thanks!

Thanks for this RequestedDeletion. Some issues in the context of the move to Centos 3.1: YUM comes with the distro, CAos has its own channel. In addition, CAos has also implemented security Meta RPM. There possibly are three requirements in terms of upgrades: (i) upgrade of centos 3.1 core rpms (ii) upgrade of rpms specific to SME shipped with Version 7 and (iii) upgrade of SME contributions distributed by others.  Quiet a handful if we are to fix what is perhaps the weakest point of SME, a comprehensive and sustainable upgrade policy. Given the fast pace of development already apparent for SME7 (activities on Devinfo and other places, i.e.Lordsfam), we may need to keep an eye on these issues before things progress too far.
