cups setup problem
« on: October 28, 2004, 07:48:49 PM »
Hi,

Problem: XP clients cannot get access to cups

Setup:

SME 6.0.1. with Cups addons installed (http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/rvandenaker/beta/e-smith-cups/ SME 6 version)

HP Laserjet 4si connected to Parallel port LPT0

Installed Foomatic en Ijs drivers

Setup HP laserjet 4si synced printers and all

Sent testpage from cups page and it works flawlessly

When installing the client side (windows XP) I get a message saying: "The server for the printer does not have the correct printer driver installed. If you want to search for the proper driver, click OK. ....."

I click OK and am presented with a list containing the right driver. Once installed connection to the server by the client is denied.

I am at a loss here. If anyone can help please do so :)

With kind regards,

Jan

PS I did look trough the documentation and the forum but got no answers I have been able to use. :-(

Since you're trying to print to a filtering queue, I suppose you read the howto about printing to filtering CUPS queues. Did you export the cups-samba PostScript driver and foomatic PPD with the cupsaddsmb command as described in that howto?
Are you sure you don't want to use a raw queue instead?

Hi Robert,

Well i got it working. I now use a filtered que with the gimp driver. In answer to your question about a raw printerque. It will only register one printjob at a time and not the number of pages the job has. I use this in a student home as a central printer so keeping track on who uses the printer to what extent is important.

Why the other driver didn't work is still a mistery though.

regards,

Jan

New Problem out of the blue?
« Reply #3 on: November 08, 2004, 03:18:05 PM »
Hello Robert it seems a new problem has come up.

Here is my setup:
SME server1 is a gateway
SME server2 is a gateway, dhcp (pointing for dns and gateway to server1) and has the cups server installed.

SME server2 has a HP Laserjet 4siMX on a parallel cable
SME server2 is setup as a filtering cups printer because accounting for the number of prints aswell as the number of printjobs is important in my setting.
I also synced the printer.

When printing a pdf or multiple text printjobs from linux all works fine.
When printing a pdf or multiple text printjobs from windows all I get is the first page.

The error log in /var/log/cups/error.log is:
E [08/Nov/2004:14:59:31 +0100] PID 2903 stopped with status 1!

As far as I can remember I didn't change a thing. Any suggestions as to a possible cause and/or solution?

Thanks in advance,

Jan

Increase LogLevel to "debug" in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, restart cupsd, and see what happens. If you want, you can send selected log snippets to me by email. My email address is in the doco for e-smith-cups.
