Topic: Compiling and kernel version

If anyone can help with this one I would be greatly appreciative...

Question: Does a network card module have to be compiled on exactly the same kernel revision as the e-smith server it is to be used on?

Ex. Does a NIC module for e-smith 4.1.2 have to be compiled on a Red Hat 7.0 system to work properly? Same hardware configuration as well?
