No internet connection(solved)
« on: May 02, 2007, 07:06:02 PM »
Hello and greetings to all,

I have a problem with my server. It seems that i have no internet connection to it. I'am using my server as a server only(no DHCP/Gateway) and its connected within my LAN.

Server: Dell dimension 2400

LAN settings:

Gateway: 10.0.0.138
Subnetmask: 255.0.0.0

Server settings:

IP: 10.0.0.15
subnetmask: 255.0.0.0
gateway: 10.0.0.138

this should work but it doesnt. I have checked the ip isnt in use so no conflicts. Dont know how to solve this really have been looking all over the internet.

Greetings and thanks in advance.

What do you mean with, i have no internet connection to it? Do you mean the webserver isn't reachable from outside your network? Can you connect to the server through your LAN?

I'm sorry i shall correct myself LAN is working fine, i have no connection at the server also the server isnt reachable from LAN.

If i ping the server its getting timeouts, so the server isnt configured right i guess but all my settings are correct.

Or there is something wrong between the physical connections...

Could you show the details you find in the "review configuration" panel from server-manager.

EDIT: Probably you can't tell me if you can't reach the server-manager...

OK here it goes:

Local IP address: 10.0.0.15/255.0.0.0
Gateway: 10.0.0.138
Additional local networks: 10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0
DHCP server disabled

DNS server 10.0.0.15
webserver www.homeserver.local
proxyserver: proxy.homeserver.local:3128
FTP server ftp.homeserver.local
SMTP,POP...: mail.homeserver.local

Primary domain: homeserver.local
Virtual domains homeserver.local
Primary website: http://www.homeserver.local
Servermanager: https://srv1/server-manager
Userpassword panel: https://srv1/user-password
email: useraccount@homeserver.local

SME Server 7.1

These are all my settings, my LAN who are managed by my router are:

10.0.0.138/255.0.0.0

DHCP is enabled on this router i think it shouldn't matter if its on or off to the server right?

you could try setting the SME server to use your lan dhcp service and see what happens

if you get a valid IP, does the SME box have internet access ?

I would seriously doubt if that will do the trick.

Did you test from console if you have connection to the internet (WAN)?

What does ifconfig show you?

When i get home i will try the ifconfig command and yes i have tested the internet from the server console and the test failed.

The server is not reachable from LAN.
I switched network cables(no cable problem).
The NIC should work. It worked on SUSE 10 Enterprise.

This doesn't tell if it works on SME because those two use different kernels.

What NIC's are you using? And post the output of ifconfig as soon as possible.

p.s.: Did SME select the apropriate drivers when you installed because it may well be that the nic's don't work on sme kernel.
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!

well when i installed SME it didnt ask for a network device so i guess it chosen his driver itself.

I dont know wich NIC it is, its an onboard NIC on the Dell motherboard. This is all i could find.

Networking Type  Integrated 10/100 Network Card
Data Link Protocol  Ethernet

You should see this ( http://wiki.contribs.org/Image:Select_local_enet_driver.jpg ) screen when you installed.

I suggest that you replace one of your nic's and login into console with admin and use the reconfigure option. You should see the screen i posted just after the server asks you for domain name (i think that it's after that but i'm not sure).
