Topic: sound on server

I'd like to use the server to provide music to a waiting room (reception) where user has no option to change music (just turn speaker off!). So I think in:

1) stream radio stations from web and play

OR

2) play a set of mp3 music stored on server.

Any of those will play sound ON EXTERNAL SPEAKERS directly connected to server.

Anyone has a tip about what I should look for ?

Inordinately aggressive calls from the music playing in the
workplace license people, they can be and are an utter PITA.

Sorry... I think I do not understand english very well: I can see how your comment helps me.


I'm not the business owner neither the decision maker (Director)... just someone has a task: make my job.

Do you understand this request has a lot of potencial uses?
You could use a server as music player as envirnoment musical , maybe even streaming classic radios from web: zero cost & no hardware to failure.
Would be better just if we had a SIMPLE web interface with permissions integrated on SME!

I've searched and found about mpeg123/321 amd play/sox but was unable to put any of them to play a mp3 music file. Anyone has done it on shell ?

I've it working! (do not have YET a web interface)

What I did:
1) created a new dag5 repository (because I'm on SME8b6).
If you're on SME7.x you need a common dag repository (change dag5 to dag and el5 to el4 on line below):

and tell yum to install it to me:

yum install mplayer --enablerepo=dag5(again, if you're on SME7, use dag instead of dag5)

after that, mplayer anysong.mp3 would play in your servers speakers.

I'm trying to install webmplayer interface on it now... more to came!

So far I'm unable to find a nice and easy to install web interface...mywebplayer is best option so far. But I'll register here what I did to play .mp3 and listen radio... so next one will have less trouble:
To listen a radio (this is Antena1 from Brasil):

to play a music:

to play a list of mp3 files endlees (looping):

the first command create the listing and second one play it endless.

not to discourage the forum request and i like answers to the how to but

using bluetooth speaker devices will let you stream music from some other small device such as an ipod.
many speakers have controls on them as well or use remote control.
some places  even have apple tv hooked up to a tv.
if an apple tv remote control is stolen or lost, it can be replaced without too much cost.
a small stereo radio with built in cd-rom that have repeat or play random tracks are cheap as well and can be replaced often when they are abused.

One of requeriments was avoid someone/anyone to change the playlist/radio station.
All other options allow it.
This way the only option available is to turn ON/OFF and volume UP/DOWN.
The other use of this solution was provide music on hold to telephonic system.

Music on hold (or MOH) is standard in FreePBX running on SME. But I guess you have a dedicated PABX....

yes I know about MoH on Asterisk, but this client uses a SO OLD dedicated PABX ... just imagine the provider do not exist (bankruptcy!) for last 10 years at least!
I never heard about them... and when I was searching for a new board to connect doorphone to PABX I heard from an expert on PABX about the more than 10 years the PABX maker is gone!  hehehehe

I gave somebody one of these sound logic speakers  last week.
Rite-aid had it for 70 and office depot had the same thing under a Casio brand nane.
There is a remote that you can keep behind the clerk and there are control also on top.
Find a cheap iPod and you might have what you want.

On the office depot Casio model, there was a sound source input using the same plug in an iPhone/iPad etc uses. That unit was stolen the delivery site and I found the sound logic at rite-aid to replace the stolen one but I did not test or use the sound logic.
If you wanted to run a small sound cord to this tower speaker, there are cables you can get cheap.
