System Time Changing

System Time Changing

I have noticed that if I correctly set the hardware time (from bios) the system time (set when booting) is different after booting. Even after setting the system time from the e-smith manager, the system time is different after a reboot. Any insight??

BTW, this is the BEST Linux product I've ever seen!!! Thank You!

Dear Steven,

First of all, thanks for the praise.

The system uses UTC time, so it's simpler to always set the time from the e-smith-manager and let e-smith automatically decide how to correctly set the hardware clock to UTC time.

If you set the time from the e-smith manager and reboot the machine, then if you go back into the time-setting function on the e-smith manager (without setting the time again), does it still show the correct time?  If so, the time is being set properly.  (From the BIOS it'll probably show GMT time)

If you try the above and the time seems to change after rebooting, can you post what sort of discrepancies you are getting?

Thanks!

Regards,

Kim

I thought I had done what you suggested yesterday. However, it's possible that I had reset the hardware clock yesterday and not reset the e-smith time after doing so. (I was trying anything to get the times to match)

So... I'll try again by correctly setting the e-smith time, reboot and I'll leave the bios alone. I'll let you know tomorrow.

Also, what does selecting time zone (country, city) have to do with the system time? Daylight savings?

Thanks for the quick response!

Hi Steve!

You can login to the e-smith server console by hold down the key alt+F3 and login as root. The password is the same as admin.
Type setup and press enter and choose Timezone configuration. Unmark Hardware set to GMT. Save the configuration and reboot.

Hi Steve!

The way Kim describe works find, but some computer dont. I have one it doesent works this way. So the answer is to change the bios clock and do the same in the e-smith server by login to the shell and type setup (the easiest way) and set the timezone to local time. Dont forget to unmark Hardware set to GMT.

THANKS BENGT for your help!

Timezone in the e-smith manager will change the e-smith clock according to the daylight savings time rules for that timezone.

Thank-you, Bengt and Kim! I keep forgetting e-smith is based on RH and that the setup tools might be there. That solved my time problem.

Thanks again.
