Slow connection
« on: October 30, 2000, 08:46:01 AM »
I just installed the newest e-smith server 4.0 on a 5x86-133Mhz (P-75) 64MB RAM, 7.6GB hard drive, two Realtek 8029 PCI ethernet cards (AOpen ALC-201). Shaw@Home cable modem in Toronto Canada.

i'm getting very very poor speeds from the ftp server, and now, going out into the internet from my internal LAN. my speed is reduced from 70kb/sec to about 20kb/sec regardless of # of users. before, i could download from e-smith Ottawa at 250kb/sec, but now can do no more than 30. external users on my FTP get no more than 7kb/sec!! my upload cap is around 40kb/sec....

is there something i need to set to increase speed?

i'm a newbie user and gave up on Red Hat/Mandrake/etc because i just wanted to use a simple solution, which e-smith is....

thanks!

One characteristic of cable modem connections is that you get varied bandwidth, depending on the number of users who are sharing your head end access point. I don't see any other factor in your system description which would be slowing down access speed.

Mind you, I know lots of people who only dream of getting 20kbps ... :-)
