Installation problems

Hello,

I read an article in a pc magazine which describes the e-smith server and gateway. I decided to give it a try for my home network. So, I downloaded the iso image file for version 4.0 and created the cd and bootable diskette.

Now, when trying to install, I receive some errors:
The first one appears after typing in "accept" and "proceed". There appears a box with the title "Kickstart error" and contains the following message:

Error opening: kickstart file
/tmp/ks.cfg: no such file or directory

I pressed OK and the installation seems to proceed. But then, a few screens later it is giving me the message that it can't find a RedHat cd....that's very strange, because the cd is inserted :)
I burned it with easy cd creator and it can be read in windows.

I copied the cd to the hard drive and started the installation from the bootable floppy and said the hard drive contains the installation packets. The installation doesn't stop with the error of not finding a cd-rom....but it stops a few seconds later with the message that I can safely reboot my machine!!!
And of course, that wasn't my intention...

On an other machine the same happens.

Does anybody knows an answer to this weird problem?? Or should I just burn a new cd??

Yes, the problem is that it for some reason cannot mount your cdrom from where it is looking for the ks file. Whats the model of your cdrom? Give a brief rundown of your setup and perhaps we can find a solution. If you have another linux/unix machine handy Id suggest a network install to avoid issues with your cdrom.

One thing I found is often alot of the older machines I install esmith on cannot read alot of the cdroms I burn, can sometimes be a problem.

Ok, so you think it's only a problem with that cd-rom drive? Well, I tried to install e-smith on my own pc also, and it gave the same problem. That's strange, because I installed Caldera OpenLinux and RedHat 6.2 earlier on this system without any problems!! (now, I got windows ME installed on that machine).

But this are the specs of the machine I intended to install e-smith on:
Pentium 133Mhz
64MB edo
Soyo 5sv motherboard with on-board sis vga chip with 2mb memory :(
Hitachi CDR-7730 4speed cd-rom drive
6,4gb IBM harddrive
Realtek 8139 10/100mbit NIC
Compaq 10mbit Intel based UTP NIC

Well, I can try to install Mandrake or another distro on my own pc and install e-smith on that machine by network install, but then I would ask if you could give me some information on doing this because I'm a linux newbie :( and e-smith looked very easy to me.
Isn't it possible to do a network installation from a windows machine?

I hope you can help me further....

Greetings,

Timothée

I just thought about the fact that I copied the cd-rom to the harddisk and the problem also comes when I try to install from harddisk. So, I guess that not only mounting the cd-rom station is a problem.

What do you think?
