I-Bay Password Problem

I-Bay Password Problem
« on: February 21, 2001, 09:36:53 AM »
I created an I-bay when I installed e-smith onto my system, and it is working quite happily.  Unfortunately, now when I try to create a new i-bay, using the exact same options (but with a different name and description), the i-bay is created (at least, the web interface tells me it is), but it does not show up under network neighborhood.  If I type in the path to the share directly ("\e-smith\stuff"), I am prompted for a password - even though I never set up a password for the i-bay.  I have tried giving it the admin password, but to no avail.  I even went in and set the password for the share, and then tried using that.  No good - same problem.  Here is my setup for the I-bay:

Name: stuff
Description: more stuff
Group: Everyone
User Access: Write=Group, Read=Group
Public Access: Local Network (no password required)
CGI Scripts: Disabled

Like I said, I set all this up, and the web browser tells me that the I-bay has been created.  And I can still get to the original share ("myshare"), no password required, but not to the new one ("stuff").  Any ideas or pointers to information would be greatly appreciated.

NB: I am using RAID-1 across two 40GB harddrives, each of which is on its own ATA/100 PCI controller card.  Since I changed the lilo.conf file, I have had no problems booting.  I don't know if this makes a difference, but since it was odd, I'd thought I'd throw it in there.

Thanks,

Did you try logging out of the windows box and back in?  I find that Windows sometimes caches its shares and therefore doesn't see the new one directly, or doesn't keep your user profile correctly.

I find that 99% of the time, if I log out and log back in, Windows picks up the new samba settings (including the newly created ibay) and everything works as expected.

Yes, I actually tried rebooting the client Win98 box, but to no avail.

But here's the strange part.  I gave up on it yesterday because I didn't feel like dealing with it.  I came back today, and the shares are now working just like they are supposed to.  So I tried creating a new one - same problem as before.  But the ones I created yesterday are just fine.

Is there some delay between when you create an i-bay and when all the directories and configuration files are ready?  I realize there is a 5-10 second delay while the web page loads, but other than that, should I expect to wait several hours (I guess that's how long it took) for an i-bay to be ready to use?

I can live with it like it is, now that i know that I just need to wait, it just seems real strange...

Thanks for your help, though.

No, there is no delay. As soon as you create an i-bay, it's ready to use.

It appears that you're encountering inconsistent behaviour by your Windows client.
