Topic: freeing unused kernel memory

I recently installed the version 4.1 on a compaq deskpro p166 and p75.  When it booted, I received the message

freeing unused kernel memory

and then it froze.

I couldn't go any further.

If anybody has any ideas on what I can do, please let me know.
