has anybody ever set up a server using starband  (dish network)    for internet connection?    I would be greatful for any info....

     I found the hack on the net that allows you to convert your starband to ethernet. I will be doing this next week for a client of mine. email me if not i will post my findings. i will use e-smith 4.12 on a pc and then serve dhcp so lets see what happens.

ok guys i hacked in to the starband satellite and removed the usb connector on it and it activated the ethernet port.

i hooked up the output of the starband ethernet port to my eth0
on my esmith box and then eth1 to my hub the internal lan.

within a few minutes i was up and running.

now here is where the problem lies you must put in the dns server from starband as your primary dns,

but some sites dont seem to come up, and squid seems to be kind of slow.

i think that it would be a good idea to run a dns server here and tweak the squid proxy server to do local caching of files that or visited quite frequently.

i am going to throw on a simple linksys router in place of it to see if there is any improvement but i dont think it will help as the latency is about 700ms

After re-visiting this issue, it turns out that starband uses compression (makes the system fast) which happens in the software, and only works with windows.  We need some of our friends to take a look at this issue and maybe write a patch for it.

In effect if you use starband with other systems and do not use their compression software, you will get a connection. (about 56K)  They say that it will cause problems on the network and that they made shut you off.
