Windows 2000 Professional cannot access e-smith Server
« on: May 16, 2001, 09:28:32 PM »
Hi Folks,

I've been busting my head for the last couple of days with no success. I'm trying to setup a Windows 2000 Workstation to access e-smith. The workstation has the MS client and tcpip installed and is using a 3com 3C905X NIC. The workstaion is getting it's IP info from the e-smth server running DHCP.

I'm trying to make the connection using the WORKGROUP method and have the workstation and server in the same workgroup.Does Caps/No Caps make a difference?

The workstation can see the workgroup put when I click on it, no server. I can get into the e-smith manager using netscape with no problems.

As a test (more for my sanity) I setup a Win98 PC and that configured in 5 minutes. It can see the e-smith server but can't see the Windows 2000 workstation.  Like wise the Windows 2000 workstation cannot see the Windows 98 PC.

Any and all help would be appreciate,

Thanks,

Craig

I'm not in front of my W2K box at the moment so this might be slightly off. Under the Network settings you have the enable NetBios over TCP/IP on a W2K box. When I get home I'll check it out and give you more specific instructions.

I once spent an entire afternoon cussing and fighting with W2K over this very issue. I *think* it has something to do with Samba.

I have a standard installation of e-smith 4.1.1 and just put on Win 2000.  No problems what so ever.  I can see my e-smith no problems.  Can you do a UNC path and see the e-smith server (//e-smith/e-smith-server).

Thanks everyone for your quick responses. I've tried all your suggestions and and still no luck.

I went so far as to remove all the networking components and reinstall, I changed the workgroup name so the PC's would have to do a new election for the master browser and that didn't work.

If anyone else has anymore suggestions, I'm more then happy to try them and I will post the solution no mattter where I find it.

Thanks,

Craig

are you running a firewall?  I once spent way too much time figthting with the exact same problem.  turned out that I didn't tell Zone Alarm (my firewall) to let the e-smith in.

might also want to check to see if the guest account on w2k is enabled, I think you need to allow the e-smith guest access to your w2k box.  It's been a while and I tried to forget the whole thing :)   so this gest account idea might be way off.

Can you get to your e-smith server from Win2K by: Start->Run-> \ServerName  ?
If not, how about Start->Run-> \192.168.1.xxx  ?

Congratulations to Greg Martin!!! And many thanks. My only regret is that I did not post the question sooner. But I've learned.... :-)

ZoneAlarm was the problem. You have to go to the "Security Settings" and click on the "advanced" button.  In there you can add computers to your local zone.  You have to add the IP of the E-smith Server.

So once again, thanks to everyone (Greg in particular) for your help and fast response.

I appreciate it,

Craig
