Error sending mail (Probably my bad)
« on: November 17, 2000, 10:53:22 PM »
I'm at the office, and I'm trying to send an e-mail through my e-smith mail server at home.  When I'm at home, I can send e-mails through with no problem on the same network (I'm NOT using e-smith as a gateway, so technically it should be the same as not being on the network).  But when I try and send e-mails from work, I get "Server Response: '553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts"

I checked all the e-mail client settings, and they're correct.

First, why does the mail server care about domains being in its list of allowed hosts? and second, what could cause this?

Thanks,
Quade

It may also help to note that I CAN receive mail from the server from work.  I just can't send.

The relays are closed to traffic not on your e-smith server's local domain. This is to stop "evil people" from using your e-smith server to spam all the "good people" of the world. Allowing an open relay (i.e. a mail relay that is open to the outside world) on your server is not avery good idea. The rcpthosts message is telling you that the domain you are trying to connect from is not allowed to connect to the mail relay on your e-smith box. Only machines on your internal network (e-smith.domainname.com) are allowed to use the mail relay.
If you want external email access to your e-smith server you can either set-up a webmail system (instructions are here somewhere), or look at connecting to your e-smith machine using ssh (instructions are here somewhere) and then using pine to do your mailing. Another option might be to use VPN.

What could cause this (and, in fact, is causing it) is that if you aren't on the local network, you shouldn't be sending mail through the e-smith server.  This would make it an open relay, and spammers all 'round the world would love you for it (until they overloaded the computer, sucked all your bandwidth, and got your account cancelled for spamming).

Charlie: Isn't this stated in the manual?  If not, maybe it should be--in 48-point type, perhaps...

Yup dude.

Got the same problem. As stated but the guys above, you need to setup webmail, something called Horde. I am still trying to get a download of it, but search under the Wishlist for Webmail and it will give you an idea.

If you go to qmail.org it will show you how to setup the RELAY but it is NOT advised.

I'm adding this to our list of things to incorporate into future
editions of the manual.  Thanks for the suggestion.
