PPTP

Hi,

I'm trying to initiate a VPN connection to an e-smith server (4.1.2) from a Win2K machine that is behind another e-smith box in server&gateway mode. Both e-smith servers are connected to the internet via adsl/cable. I keep getting "error 678, there was no answer". I could understand if the connection cannot get through the e-smith gateway. However, I still get the same error when I try to initiate a connection on my local network interface just to test. Both my e-smith boxes are refusing the vpn connections, are there any particular pptp settings I'm missing? I have 128 encryption installed in Win2K, so It's not that. I can ping both machines, on the local net and the internet. I don't know if it's something obvious or not. In the e-smith configuration file, it says that 1 session is allowed, so I know my changes in the httpd-admin are filtering through. Any info would be great,

Thanks,

EB

Are you connecting through AT&T on the cable modem?  I finally got past the user/login part for it to just always time out.  Looking in the logs I found that the server gave up on waiting for the connect to respond to PPTP port for VPN connection.  I believe that AT&T filters out those protocals.  I know they do for peer-to-peer SMB access.  All in the name of security, of course.

I connect through Shaw@Home and on the other end with a commercial wireless internet provider. I have successfully initiated a VPN connection across the net with Win2K to Win2K before, so I don't think that's the problem. I just remembered though that my server at home is still 4.1.1 I put the security patches on, but I forgot to upgrade to 4.1.2 I'll have to do that tonight and try to connect again from work tomorrow. Evidently there are some pptp issues in 4.1.1

Thanks

I upgraded both e-smith servers to the latest version with the latest updates. I read in the 4.1.2 release notes that pptp port forwarding is enabled by default, so I shouldn't have to do anything to that. Should I be able to initiate a pptp tunnel to my local interface on the e-smith server? Win2K just does not seem to want to connect or even see the other computer. Do I have to make any other configuration changes to the pptp port forwarding? Is my problem related to the fact that the win2K vpn client has to go through an e-smith server to access the other e-smith server? I have initiated Win2K vpn connections before, and the client computer had to be directly connected to the internet, it would not go through a proxy/nat server. Is this the case here? Any help would be appreciated, or point me to the right documentation. Thanks,

Hi

I tried to get connected to E-smith 4.1.1 from win2k client using PPTP and i
got succeeded. I just followd the steps provided by win2k to establish vpn
and not done much on the server except enabling the pptp and giving 5 as the
number of connections to permit.

But the problem is still i am unable to use the SMTP. I have not got any
error in /var/log/messsages ..how do i use SMTP for the remote users with VPN.
