Keeping a good daily track of /var/log/messages file have helped me to check my system. Everything (even normal or not) seems to be reported there.
Maybe it could be very helpfull having any error repot mailed to administrator mail account, (some errors are reported via mail)
as this file is very large near weekends.(four rotating record files one per week)

There are  more files in /var/log/ that can help you track security isues, connection, proxy usage, printing and everithing....
Hope this help
A.

You could use a useful tool called 'LogCheck'
