Mailing list management software

G'day all

I run an e-smith server that provides gateway/net services to my library and provides websites for a number of nonprofit community groups.

I want to transfer some existing mail lists from an copy of EMWAC IMS to a more modern program -- preferably under Linux.

To date I have identified Mailman (list.org) and ezmlm as the ones most likely to do what I need.

Any opinions on which one will work best with e-smith and pointers to an installable rpm?

Mailman is great software and easy to configure and run, even for non-technical users, but I don't know how well it would integrate with qmail.  I don't believe anyone's tried to write an e-smith add-on for it yet.

ezmlm is written especially for qmail, and has even been packaged for e-smith (see http://www.e-smith.org/contrib/modules_search.php?op=searchResults) but doesn't quite meet Mailman's standards for usability, in my opinion.

Thanks for the tip

Looking at the home pages I prefer Mailman myself, but at this point something that works is what I need :)

Looking at the entry in the list of RPM's I take it that this is a source distribution of ezmlm-idx. If Gordon Rowell sees this he might have the answer.....

Does anyone have an ezmlm-idx binary RPM that anyone is aware of?

I would rather not install an entire development environment on the server -- e-smith works clean and tidy as is

I've installed the ezmlm.idx contrib and got it working.  You need to install the standard ezmlm-idx-std-0.40-2.i386.rpm
and then the e-smith rpm
e-smith-ezmlm-idx-0.1.3-12.noarch.rpm

They are in /contrib/GordonRowell/RPMS/noarch and /contrib/GordonRowell/RPMS/i386
respectively.

They setup an interface for the manager, but it's rudimentary (though improving thanks to some input from Gordon recently) - you'll still need to do some commandline work.

WARNING - trap for beginners (ie me!) - you must perform any ezmlm commands such as ezmlm-make as the ezmlm user, so do
sudo -u ezmlm -s prior to performing these commands.

If you don't you'll stuff up the install and will have to remove it and reinstall it.

You can also try listar (www.listar.org), which I use for several mailing lists (not on e-smith yet...).  It also has a fairly nice web front end for list management.

I know folks have it running with qmail, but don't know the specifics....
