I checked that i have bind version 8.2.3 in the server. Is there a possibility to configure it to e-smith to act as a nameserver too?

My isp allows only one computer directly behind the modem so i cant put a nameserver too beside my e-smith box.

Do i need to need to install a newer version of bind? And how am i supposed to do this because as ia understand e-smith only allows to install new pacages from .rpm-s . Where do i get bind in rpm-s?

How can I configure existing bind to act as a nameserver not only for my local network but olso to the internet.

e-smith already acts as DNS... in fact is does not allow queries from external networks. but why should your box act as DNS for machines other than those on your local net?!

additionally you can add a secondary DNS in e-smith-console if you need to resolve adresses other than in you local network.

I want a nameserver because i want to register a domain. E-Smith box does not include that feauture. I read from one of the phorums that it is possible. I am not very keen on setting up another computer to act as a nameserver because it is not very advertising to say that your web page is on one of free service providers rather than on your own domain.
If you are going to suggest getting a virtual domain then i am on a very tight budget and i cant afford it.

Can anyone help me on configuring e-smith to acting as a nameserver for external networks.

Sander,

If you are registering a domain, and you have a fixed IP address, you can use www.granitecanyon.com to host your DNS records. I understand that DYNdns.org, TZO.org and others will do the same sort of thing.

You can get free DNS services for a static or dynamic IP at www.zonedit.com.
You get 5 domains for free then there is a charge for more.
I'm using it with my domain (http://rawtruth.net) on a static IP. I've never tried it with a dynamic IP.
