I have been struggling with the EXACT problem for a couple of days now... even went as far as formatting my HDD and re-installing eSmith 412 again!!

I thought that backing up >2GB to desktop would be fine, but windows 2000 doesn't like that size so eSmith restore command doesn't work either.. had to rebuild EVERYTHING from scratch, fortunately I had spot backups of the important parts, now I AM up and running...

How did I fix it? It **WAS** the ISP's fault!

Two days ago they "upgraded" their broadband server, and as they are completely Windows centric, they didn't think of our (linux users) particular requirements. After going through hoops for the last 18 hours or so, finally I convinced the lead engineer to look at my port's setup, he did... he reset the connection and everything is working beautifully again!

I emphasised that I do NOT use PPTP, but bridging (using Alcatel SpeedTouch Pro), DHCP client and bridging "forward" - access to the internet and ISP hookup is through PPPoE.

Good luck in convincing your ISP that it is THEIR fault!!

hope this helps

Hi Thorsten,

I am also using e-smith 4.1.2 with t-online and it is working perfectly. I suggest that you check your t-online username and make sure it is exactly in this format:

AAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTT0001@t-online.de

( AAAAAAAAAAAA = Anschlusskennung,
  TTTTTTTTTTTT = T-Online-Nr. )

Good luck,
Stephan

pppoe timeouts are 100% ISP related in my experience - call their helpdesk next time it happens and check that they have no reported service outages.

thanx for your advices... as for dsl worked on my windows machine other than on e-smith, i installed redhat 7.1 it did't work as well...
the information provided by ifconfig made me think cos the hardwareadress reads: FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF. so i changed the networkcard connected to the modem from a realtek8139 chipset nic to an old 3com509/isa.... and now it works :)
