Seperate User Manager from E-Smith Manager
« on: June 25, 2001, 07:37:00 AM »
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to seperate the usermanager module from the e-smith manager and put it in an I-Bay.  The purpose is to allow someone to log in with a username other than admin to administer user accounts.

Thanks,

The e-smith manager is not a standard website.  It runs on it's own httpd service on port 980 and is 'locked' to the admin account, as are the key events and actions behind it.  There is no easy way to achieve what you want.  Unfortunately your alternatives are to accept this limitation or have someone with experience design a custom manager interface to meet your needs.

Darrell, could the event scripts user-create, modify, and delete be called from an Ibay only accessable on the internal network (and password protected)?

Might be a nice addition to the next version of E-Smith.  I love how users can change their own password and this would be an delegate out more duties to someone else.

Probably wrong, but just a thought.

Essentially that would be the idea, however I would not use an ibay but create a custom http.conf entry and host everything from a directory.  To match my rpms I would host from /opt/administration/usermgr or something similar then either use perl or php to design the new User Manager interface.

Hi

This is one of the most significant problems I have with e-smith. Most of the gateways I install are in offices where technology knowledge is low and fingers wander....

It would be really valuable to allow super user (current admin) and a other reduced admin user functionality able to add/modify email accounts and maybe ibays. If the ability add a new admin users and have a set of checkboxes for each of the menu entries would be ok. That was a second admin users would only get the particular menu entries for say users, ibays, logs and shutdown.

Even have the config script with a series of allowable menu items. If more functionality was needed to be undertaken SSH in, edit the file and carry on - neater to have alternate users however.
