WEBSERVER PROBLEMS
« on: June 25, 2001, 11:10:40 PM »
I have a simple test webpage at www.chaloner.ca. My ftp is accessible from outside of my local area network, but the web page is not. Email to me at my mail server from outside of my local area network also works.

I have recently registered the name chaloner.ca and use dyndns.org as my DNS service for my cable based server.

If I can access my ftp and mail server, why can I not access my web space?

I am wasting a lot of time.... What am I missing here guys???

grasshopper you are not wasting time but are merely pushing the boundaries of your ignorance :-) Or that's how I console myself when progress seems slow.

When you say your webpage isn't visible do you mean http://www.chaloner.ca/ ?

There is no such host, but I can see a test e-smith website at
http://chaloner.ca/

So you need to create a www host for your domain.  The problem isn't with e-smith but your domain name host setup.

OK. My primary e-smith webspace can be seen with http://chaloner.ca but not with http://www.chaloner.ca. What do I need to do to fix it? Would it be something I need to do on my e-smith server, or something I have to do with www.dyndns.org, or something I have to do where I registered the domain name?

I looked at hostnames in the e-smith-manager.... WWW is there at 192.168.0.1. My local network is on 192.168.0.2 ... 192.168.0.255.
I tried to add a virtual hostname (knowing this was not the answer) and it told me it could not be the domain name.

It's simple.  www.chaloner.ca is _not_ the same as chaloner.ca--at least, not necessarily.  Your e-smith server only serves DNS for your local network.  If you go to "www" using one of the machines on your lan, it would work, but for www.chaloner.ca, it queries the root dns servers, who tell it that there's no such host.
