email ports ???
« on: June 29, 2001, 12:02:50 PM »
I have a problem with email. That is I can send it, recieve it locally and thats it.

I know what the problem is, I think, I just do not know how to fix it. I think it is because my mail ports are closed but I am not sure how to check this or open them.

1. Do you have to open port 25 and 110 for e-smith internet email to work? or are these open by default?

2. I use imap locally and webmail externally. Can I configure e-smith to retrieve my email from my ISP POP3 account? Other email gets sent directly to e-smith via DNS.

3. I would also like to open all ports on a VPN connection. I know there is a security risk but I figure since I only have one vpn connection and I flick the uplink switch on my switch which obviously disconnects my internal network when I am not there or open a VPN connection myself which stops anyone else from using it. The reason for this is I am try to use a non internet but LAN supported game over the internet. Everything else works fine, I can ping, map drives etc So I have guessed it must be that the ports are closed???

Any ideas?
TIA

You do not have to adjust the default port settings on e-smith to be able to send mail to outside networks, nor to receive it from outside networks.  Port 110 wouldn't need to be open in any case; only port 25 would be used.

You can configure e-smith to grab mail from your ISP--check the manpage on fetchmail.

Can't answer the other question, sorry.

Thanks for that Dan,

Don't you need port 110 open for IMAP?

Port 110 is POP3, not IMAP (IMAP is port 143).  You don't need either of those ports open for communication with the outside world, though; remote servers will communicate with your server using SMTP.  Of course, if you're fetching mail from other POP/IMAP servers, those would use ports 110 or 143, but in normal operation, SMTP is all that would be used.

I had a similar problem when I first set up my E-Smith as a server and gateway for my adsl connection and tried to access my normal pop3 email from my ISP account via Microsoft Outlook. The solution in the end was quite simple, all I had to do was change my my pop3 and smtp servers to the relevent I.P. addresses rather than the ISP supplied names and it has worked faultlessly ever since. I actually stumbled across this after using a little mail program called popcorn which is web based but displayed the mail servers I.P. address while it was downloading. check it out at http://www.ultrafunk.com/products/popcorn/

hope this is of some help

Hello,

I had similar problem myself.
I found out it is much better to send emails over e-smith rather than from inside! it is much faster for you, and you can set e-smith to fetch yout emails!

it is a security risk to open ports <1024, so you should see there are not more then only necessary!!!!

*if you wish more Infoon howto set e-smith to fetch emails, mail me!
