Fails on ide0 on bootup (but sees disk on Promise ATA100)
« on: June 30, 2001, 03:58:25 AM »
Following the mini How-to, the hard disk on the Promise ATA/100 adaptor seems to be seen during bootup, vmlinuz booting. The ata100 disk is on the first controller on the Promise card. An atapi CDRom is set as master on the first ide controller on the motherboard. I have tried the installation with another CD drive just in case...

However, on reaching the line:

ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irg 14

The system hangs (showing the screen thus far)

The messages that have gone by previously are
PIIX3: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 39
PIIX3: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
   ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007, BIOS settings: hda:pi0, hdb:pio
   ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f, BIOS settings: hdc:pi0, hdd:pio
hda: FX400_02, ATAPI CDROM drive
hdg: QUANTUM FIREBALL KA9.1, ATA DISK drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irg 14

What is going on here ... and is there anything that can be done to make things progress past this point?

Seems to me, that you have our irq's  in a mess:
Do I understnad this coorect: you have the ide-connectores on the motherboard enabled ( they use irq 14 and 15) AND ide channels on an external card too ( they will no doubt use irq 14/15)

Normal rule of pc-thumb.: If you do this, make sure you know where your irq's are!

( ps.. just a 5 second reply, to help you on the way or verify something.. not an indoubt research project about the how/why/what's) If this info is usefull, use it, if not, pretend I never said anything.. ;-)

Give it a shot! ( which means, either using the extenral card and disabling the stuff on the motherboard, or leave the secondary active on the motherboard, and disable the secondary on the external card..)
Better maybe: disable the motherboard ones altogehter..

have fun, kees blokland

Seems me is typing faster than the keyboard is understanding what I try to say:
(when is someone going to invent an autocorrecting keyboard ??)

Seems to me, that you have our irq's  in a mess:
Do I understand this correct: you have the ide-connectors on the
motherboard enabled ( they use irq 14 and 15) AND ide channels on an
external card too ( they will no doubt use irq 14/15) ?

Normal rule of pc-thumb.: If you do this, make sure you know where your
irq's are! I know, pci-slots 'should' not do this. I've been bitten by this once, hence I remeber..

( hope there are fewer typing errors left this time ;-)
