FTP client from internal to external

FTP client from internal to external
« on: July 11, 2001, 01:28:20 PM »
I've got two problems, as I am new to linux I don't know how to handle this.

1. When I want to use my ftp client to access an ip / domain outside the local network I can't connect. How do I set this up?
What do I need to do?

2. With newsgroups the same problem....

Thanks for any pointers in the right direction,

Ollie

Some more info:

I have setup the e-smith 4.1.2 version as a server and gateway.

As far as I understand, you want to run ftp on one of your client-pcs in the LAN which probably is a Windows (or Apple) PC?

Are you using DHCP on that PC or do you have a manual network setup?

For the second, I would check your network definitions on that PC especially the Default Gateway entry which should point to your E-smith's gateway IP address.

You might also want to test whether you can do a ping to an external IP address to see whether your IP packets find their way out of your LAN (and back)?

I would also like to know how to ftp through the e-smith proxy.

We currently have an e-smith proxy/email box which works great for email/proxying despite being a P166 with 90ish MB RAM (rather slow for refreshing the webmail window - 12 users).
On another note it is ironic that our servers are mostly of a lower spec than the desktop (ie Windows) machines that they serve!

Back to the point ..
We have now had our ADSL changed to static IPs, which gives the router a different network address  to our internal network and I need to know how to ftp out.
We use flashfxp which needs a proxy configuration.
if proxy is x.x.x.x port 3128
router is y.y.y.y
how do we configure the ftp prog to work as it comes up with a squid error message when we try to ftp out through the proxy.  I'll try any W98 compatible ftp prog that works if anybody has recommendations/advice and idiots guide instructions.
Unfortunately ** a direct link out through the router is not an option **, so I need to sort this "issue" ASAP!

Thanks

Had the same problems, but then found out that I didn't set the IP address of the gateway and DNS servers on the windows client!

After I set these everything worked as it should be. So it might be worth checking those!

Thanks for the reply

"Had the same problems, but then found out that I didn't set the IP address of the gateway and DNS servers on the windows client!"

we use win98se and dynamic ip via DHCP on a e-smith box.
where do we enter the IP address of the gateway and DNS servers on the windows client?

Thanks

cracked it!!

removed network card and drivers on Win98 machine
reinstalled network card which then found the upto date network/server DHCP configuration and now allows direct internet connection and passive ftp.

Obvious really! Just took weeks to identify and that was by accident by adding a new workstation!
