Strange IMP behaviour
« on: September 01, 2001, 04:28:41 PM »
Hi,

We're using e-smith 4.1.2 and I am a linux newbie :-|

After a thunderstorm and powercut our IMP webmail server started to act strangely.  Users can still log in and it displays the inbox message list as usual, however whatever the user tries to do after that, the IMP login window is displayed.  (I.e. if the user clicks on a message to open it, he is thrown back to IMP's login screen).  The maillog file shows that 2 seconds after a successful login to IMP the user is automatically logged out again...  This explains why the login screen reappears, but I have no idea why the use gets thrown out two seconds after logging in without having done anything from whitin IMP.

I have successfully applied the IMP security patch and disabled and re-enabled webmail from the e-smith manage hoping that this would restore IMP to its normal behaviour, but the error persists.

e-smith's webserver works flawlessly and so does the IMAP mail services (we use OE in IMAP mode successfully now when IMP is out of service).

When I asked this question in the IMP forums they advised me to check the apache error llogs, but apparently isn't configured in the same manner, so I did not find the logs mentioned.

PLEASE does any of you have a clue what's going on..?  Apparently this has something to do with file corruption since it appeared after a powercut.  What happens if I reinstall e-smith, will it retain all users / data and settings?  Will a reinstallation probably fix this problem?  (I'd prefer to find the real cause to learn from it...)

Thanks to anyone having hints on what to do...

regards

Hi,

If this is a too stupid question, please tell me  - so I don't need to check this forum every hour;-)

I don't know if it is too stupid or too difficult; however, if you use the

"Email replies to this thread, to the address above"

checkbox at the bottom of the message entry screen, you won't have to check this forum for replies. They will be emailed to you.

This type of problem usually indicates a problem with session management in IMP.  Perhaps MySQL isn't running, or perhaps one of the config files got hosed.  Check the FAQ at www.horde.org for more information.

I have done that, but apparently IMP runs under different configurations.  I was told to check for different error/configuration files but they weren't even present on my system.

I have reinstalled the mysql rpms from the 4.1.2 CD but the prob persists.  Does anyone have a clue where to look to find the reason for this problem?
