Terminal Access Through VPN
« on: September 14, 2001, 06:13:30 PM »
Hello,

Does anyone know if it is possible to access a Windows Terminal Server sitting on the lan behind an e-smith server via VPN (PPTP) from a Terminal Client running on a Win98 PC (with the appropriate DUN update) across the internet ?

Thanks

Yes. I access my Windows 2k server from home through my e-smith server. No VPN is needed. Just put in yourdomain.com in the client for terminal services in the box.. make sure that domain name points to your windows server or else put it the IP. Hope this helps..

Thanks for the reply.

I think you have misunderstood my post. The W2K Server and the e-smith gateway are on on the LAN with the e-smith server providing firewall / gateway services to the LAN. The W98 PC is at home, no LAN just pure dial up. I believe in this setup VPN is necessary or you will not get access to anything behind the firewall (I know of LOTS of people who would be very interested to talk to you if you could access the W2K server behind the firewall without opening an access means like PPTP).

In any case, I have since managed to set up and test this very scenario and am pleased to say that you CAN access the W2K Server behind the ESSG via VPN.

Hats off to you ESSG team !

VPN is nice but not needed if I understand what you are asking...
You have win2k server behind the e-smith? Ok, in order to use TS behind the firewall without VPN, then you must forward port 3389 to your WIN2K. There are howto's on this subject for E-smith. I personally run Win2k pro behind E-smith and I connect to 2 win2k TS servers. One of which is behind a Linksys router. I forwarded port 3389 for TS and port 500 for VPN if I ever need to use that also. Hope this helps.....

I have a e-smith server and a W2K Server running Citrix (and Terminal Server).  With the VPN client I can enter with the dial up and run the Terminal Server Client or the ICA client for Citrix.  It runs very good.

I can also access the Citrix server without the VPN with port fowarding.

This could be important since Windows XP Prof. will include remote access to each XP workstation on the LAN with Terminal Server.  This could be the next Microsoft casualty  PCAnywhere
