PPTP VPN and Win2K Client
« on: September 14, 2001, 11:21:09 PM »
Hi All,

First, I've done this before with other PPTP servers...

I just tested the e-smith pptp server for the first time.  I enabled the service by setting clients = 2 in the web manager screen, nothing else.

If I connect from a Win95 PC (has DUN 1.4 update), the connection is made and everything seems fine.

If I connect with a Windows 2000 Pro PC, the connection err's out and no connection is made.  I tried every setting in the connection properties sarting with the most secure handshake+encryption (default) and going down to MS-CHAP (old) and no encryption.

Any clues or known fixes?

TIA,

G

Hi,

You should just use the default setting in win2k for the pptp connection. You shouldn't have to change anything. Can you see port 1723 on the e-smith server from your win2k machine? Are you by any chance using zonealarm firewall? I had great troubles with zonealarm and pptp. I ended up having to remove zonealarm from my machine. Just a few thoughts...

Thanks much for your input!

I'm actually on a local net (192.168.1.0) with both of the test PCs... no firewall issues or access issues.

The connection (apparently) gets past the password handshaking and goes into the 'registering your computer on the network' part...then fails.

It's been my experience that PPTP servers (especially Linux based) don't support Win2K and Win95/98 with the same settings.  Especially with the default setting in Win2K (CHAP V2 and RC4) which is much more secure than Win95/98 (CHAP and no encryption).

Thanks again,

G

Hi,

I'm using Win2k SP2 with e-smith 4.1.2. I just added a pptp connection in w2k, I didn't change any of the settings, just kept the defaults, and it connected 1st try. I however wasn't aware that you can connect pptp on your local e-smith network. I was under the impression from the manual and the list, that the connection had to be on the outside nic. Whatever works, I hope you find the problem.

Hmm...

As this Win2k machine was fresh, I installed SP2 and created a new VPN connection and it worked!  There might have been other factors (a reboot was needed for the update), but it APPEARS that SP2 was the ticket.

Hmm...

Thanks very much.

We have implemented only CHAP V2 and 128 bit encryption.
