PPPOE : TIMED OUT ???
« on: September 17, 2001, 03:32:54 AM »
Hi everybody,

I installed e-smith on a computer that will play the role of a gateway to internet for my local area network. I have ADSL with sympatico but I could not connect because of a TIMED OUT problem.

Would anyone experienced a similar problem.

Thanks for your help.

Salim.

seems to be a problem with your provider
doble check connection, username and password
try these commands at root session
service pppoe status
service pppoe restart
and see what message is reported.
this info could help to solve the problem

Hi Alejandro,

My connection with sympatico works fine. I have a machine with Windows 2000 that I use to connect to internet (till I get that gateway up and running !).

the username and password are correct, no doubt about it.
When I configured e-smith, I gave the follwoing username xxxxx@sympatico.ca + password.

How you got a unix session windows that you can type the commands you ask me ? I can not get away from the main menu ???

Thanks a lot for your time.

Alejandro

Try, at the main console from e-smith: alt+F1 or alt+F2 this will give you two aditional login windows
then you can login as root (instead of admin) with your same admin password and you'll get a prompt no mater where you are you can tipe the comands we talk about.
If you're connecting the server from a desktop via ssh or telnet (I would not recomend using telnet) is the same procedure, log in the server as root with root/admin password an you will get a linux command prompt
aditionaly at configuration process of e-smith you can change the way e-smith starts up a session you have assumed the default one (display console) that's wy at main intereface you get console as default.
double check your pppoe protocol settings or ask somebody who has simpatico as isp or ask simpatico if you have to specify something particular to unix systems.
hope this help.

Hi, Alejandro

Her is the results of the command you ask me to perform.

> service pppoe status

NOTE : You have enabled demand-connection; adsl-status may be innacurate
adsl-status : link is down -- could not find interface corresponding to pppd pid 4888

> service pppoe restart

Shutting down ADSL linkadsl-stop : The adsl-connect script (PID 680) appears to have died.

Bringing up ADSL link ....................... TIMED OUT

Later on I tried to run adsl-start in DEBUG mode
I typed :
> DEBUG=1 adsl-start

In the file that has been generated, I noted the following statements :

using interface ppp0
connect : ppp0<-->/dev/pts/0 (by the way, the follwoing file does not exist !)
pppoe : ioctl (SIOCGIFHWADDR):No such device
sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 ]
write : warning : Input/Output error (5)
Modem hangup
Connection terminated.
Script /usr/sbin/pppoe -p /var/run/pppoe.pid.pppoe -I eth1 -T 80 -m 1412 -D /tmp/pppoe -debug-13393/pppoe-debug.txt-0 finished (pid 13420), status=0x1

And far in the file I noticed the follwoing patterns of messages :

Extract from /var/log/messages

pppd 2.4.0 started by root, uid 0
using interface ppp0
connect : ppp0<--> /dev/pts/0
ioctl (SIOCGIFHWADDR): No such device
write : warning : Input/Output error(5)
Modem hangup
Connection terminated
Exit.

This pattern repeats itself for about 10 times.

At hte end of the file, I noted the following : rp-pppoe-2.5

Hope that will give you some information about what is happening with my system regarding the PPPOE connection.

Cheers,

Alejandro

I'm not really an very experienced user at all but it seems to me thay you have someting wrong with your nics have you doublechecked wich one is the external/internal nic.
something in your hardware address is wrong. (SIOCGIFHWADDR)
can you comunicate betwen server and clients? have you checked the wiring and "utp class"  matching of your  utp terminals?
your e-smith is not comunicating with your subscriber.
that's only my guess....:(
