4.12 install gone strange
« on: September 18, 2001, 04:51:13 AM »
I just installed 4.12 on a little old and slow box. After the install, which went just like it was supposed to, I removed the CD and boot disk and the the process restarted the computer. That is where the trouble came. It said that there was an invalid boot disk.... that I needed to put the right boot disk in. I then went into the BIOS and changed the primary ide to auto/normal because it also could not find the HD. I still can't get it to boot. If I use the boot disk it goes to re-install.

I'm sure it is something that is quite simple that I am missing, but I just can't figure it out. Any ideas out there, folks?

Thanks,

Steve MacGregor

Steve, If your bios is not configured to use your hdd as your first or second or so on... boot device, you will get a message like that, check your bios configuration, ansd use your hdd as your first device (or second after floppy).
is not a problem of detecting your hard drive cause if could install without trouble.
what kind of system are you installing on?
pentium? pentium MMX?

I am trying to install on an old pentium 90.

I have got the settings in the BIOS set to boot "C,A" and I had switched that from "A,C"

Are there any other settings that I should note in the BIOS? I have the HD set to AUTO and NORMAL. Perhaps that is the problem???

Thanks,

Steve

I dont know if your mainboard can be set to autodetect hdd and autodetect hdd mode
any way it could be set to LBA  (in some older pcs)
problem is that linux is recognizing hdd in his own way.

try to detect hdd manualy  with your bios hdd detection page to see what parameters are detected.(write them down)

another idea: what size is your disk? it should be less than 8.4 gb for that kind of mainboard, and some other mainboards can“t handle even this disk size without a disk manager this is out of my knowledge (not very extense at all), cause i dont know how linux takes this kind of managers.

you should try to let all things in auto (both HDD tipe  and  HDD Mode) and then install on it again.

COOL! I will give it a shot! I suppose there would be a diffrence on the install compared to the settings. I did not have it on LBA, I know that for sure.

YEEEAAAAA! It worked! I switched everything to auto, but the kicker was that the HD was set to 'master' when it had to be set to 'master with non-ata slave.' Thanks for your help!
