SME 5.0 -- Request for status...

I am just looking for an update on 5.0's release status.  A little information can sometimes go a long way to appease the masses.

It is understanding the release not to be made until retail buyers have made purchase. This new company motivated by dollar

This is NOT correct.... Mittel is not allowed to hold back the free version way beyond release of their retail version, which mean they won´t. This is, as frustating as it may be, just a sign of a delay in shipping of the retail version aswell.
Even so, I would still like some official info from Mittel regarding a release date....

Oh, puh-leez!

What company is not motivated by money? There is little sense in forming and running a company if not to make money, shelter money, launder money, or otherwise cause money to change states. The former e-smith never ran a charity; neither does Mitel. You should consider yourself lucky to be able to take advantage of the fruits of their labors FOR FREE if you so choose, and without any fear of legal transgression. Try getting that from Microsoft!

And can we please put an end to the ameobic notion that ServiceLink -- the software, the service, and the pricing -- is the result of Mitel's purchase of e-smith? First, there is no way ServiceLink came into being just since Mitel came along. This was exactly the direction e-smith was headed long before Mitel, and in fact was probably one of the reasons Mitel elected to make the purchase. Second, Mitel didn't just come along and buy e-smith like it was a loaf of bread at the grocery. There was an offer, a negotiation, and a decision by e-smith to agree to be purchased. Any way you slice it, the 5.0 offering is pretty much as e-smith intended it. About the only thing that has changed is the name.

I am sales distributer for Mittel . They say we try and take product to customer for sales. we release free later. Ignor the smith persona he want recognision for product he no longer develop.

Actually, this is not correct.  Mitel has no obligation (beyond their moral obligation to keep their word) to release the free version at all.  However, they may not prohibit others from doing so--that is, once I've bought a copy from them, they can't stop me from distributing the GPL'd parts of it to anybody I want.

No, I don't think they're doing that--I think it's just a case of the release being delayed a few days, which is perfectly normal.  There's certainly no reason at this time to assume sinister motives.

I was only looking for a 'Yes, it's coming.  Got a couple more bug to squish.'

And a 'Should be out (fill in approximate day), but that is depending on (X) bug(s) getting resolved.' would be nice, but usually only opens a can of worms.

And while I am at it,  are there any new feature to explicitly look forward to in 5.0?

Actually, Brian, I agree, I'd like to see that kind of an update too.  I'm just getting frustrated (rather like Scott, it seems) at the people spreading gloom and doom about the situation with no apparent justification.

As to new features, ServiceLink is the big thing, AFAIK.

Okay, I'd concede that a "what's new" listing, besides ServiceLink, would have been nice. We can be sure that there will be bug fixes and some package updates, but I've not heard much on the forums to indicate any new features other than SL. Hopefully, even if there are no new services, there may be a few more configuration options, but who knows.

On the release date subject, though, by my calendar it is Sep 18 -- pretty much still in the midst of mid-September in my book, and far too early to be calling something late that was given a mid-September release date. If SMEv5 shows up in the next few days, or week or two, I'm sure that by November we'll all have forgotten about when it was released.

ServiceLink does sound cool, but I am currently using E-Smith for my home server/gateway/firewall.  I could use SuSE, Red Hat, or something else,  E-Smith just made it very easy.

I have not had the opportunity to 'sell' anyone else on it as a Company consumer, but I have had a little interest from other friends, but mostly in the 'free' version as it works well with everything I do, and with my VPN into work.

I have two e-smith systems at home. One is the interface for my cable modem. The other is a play system that I routinely destroy :-) Well, when I don't have it loaded with one of those "other" OS wannabe things, that is.

I've talked a half dozen or so home users into using e-smith. The 'free' version, as you put it. I've also got three co-workers using it for their home systems. As all but one of these 9 people work in the IT industry, it might be considered free marketing for Mitel

We have sold a few e-smith systems where I work, and I can tell you that once they are installed, we pretty much forget about them. If there is a problem on the network, the e-smith server is the last place I look. And in the rare instances where e-smith has been the problem, Mitel has been quick to provide either a work around or a fix.

Okay, now I'm sounding like they paid me to post this, so I'll quit!

I've been holding off playing with a few contribs waiting for 5.0 to see if there are packages that have already been updated or added.  I don't want to get stuck enjoying a contrib and it doesn't work on 5 untill the original author gets the time to update it.

I know, I could always recompile apps under RedHat 7.x and they should work, but I'm a SuSE person, and I don't want to get into a situation where the E-Smith/SME community can no longer help because I am too far off base.

The gallery contrib is the big one I want to play with.
