Are you sure it´s 128 bits?
Try this: "windows\system\" right click on "pppmac.vxd".
If you read "PPPMAC (Export Version)"? then it is not 128 bits.
If you read "PPPMAC (US/Canada Only, Not for Export)" then it´s 128 bits.

I tried out for long time to work with E-Smith-Server, Version 4.1.2 and now with SME 5 and as client with Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows 98SE.

With these clients I didn't get any connection over VPN. I think in also in the latest DUN (V1.4, USA/Canada-Version) it's still have some bug's.

Today morning I tried out with Windows ME, without any special downloads.

And it's work fine, OK, I had a very slow connection (19200 bps)...

The settings I used on the clients was:

- One Dial-Up for Internet (eg. over Sunrise/Diax (in Switzerland))
- One Dial-UP for VPN with the follow settings:

  General:

VPN-Server: IP-adress You see from outside the network
  Microsoft VPN-Adapter

  Security:
Login-Name/Password as used on the VPN-Server
Domaine: as used for the LAN, where the VPN-Server is connected

  Logon on Network enabled
  Encryted Password? enabled

If You have any question, please let me know.

Thanks Simon

So how do people outside of the US/Canada update DUN to 128 Bit ?  I can't find it on the Microsoft Site.

Bill.

I downloaded the 98dun128 update from Microsoft, extracted files, copy file "pppmac.vxd" to windows/system.
Don't install the update, it will not update "pppmac.vxd".

I downloaded the DUN update from:
http://mssjus.www.conxion.com/download/win98se/update/17648/w98/en-us/dun14-se.exe

There are also versions for 95 and 98, see the Microsoft article:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q297/8/16.ASP

Install the update but be sure to use the US language if your version of windows is a forgeign ( for EXPORT ).
In 95 and 98 you have to edit the registry ( see above article of Microsoft )
In 98SE you will see inside DUN the menu-entry "Connection" -> "Settings", hit the Security-TAB and enable all tags e.g. "disable of sending LAN-Manager Password" , "secure VPN connection" and "Only accept 128 bit encryption"

I have tested it with 98 and 98SE, running like hell

Good luck
Hartmut
