A few questions
« on: January 16, 2001, 10:19:27 PM »
Our company is currently using the NetMax suite that is very similar to the e-smith product but I think for all the reading and FAQ, that this one is a bit better.  I still have a few questions I could not easily find answers for.  I would like to start off by saying, “I know Linux can do it but, can it be done through the interface?”

1.  IP forwarding.  The ability to map an outside address to an internal Nat  address.
2.  DNS slave.  Can the server be configured to back up the primary?
3.  FrontPage.  Are the FrontPage extensions supported?
4.  Web mail.  Can a user check his mail for the Internet?
5.  Firewall.  Can I enable and disable ports through the interface?
6.  Is there any port monitoring software running?
7.  I know it is beta but can the VPN portion of e-smith easily connect to another e-smith server?
8.  Administration.  Can you remotely administer a system through SSL?

Thanks in advance,

I'll tell ya what I (think) I know. :)

#3  no. not out of the box. I believe I read on the list somewhere that you could install FP extensions yourself though. Take a look at freshmeat.net and do a search for "front page". note of caution.... security risk.

#4 version 4.0 can with some add-ons. I use it myself and it works wonderfully. 4.1 will have it built in. If you have a user account on the e-smith box, you can read your email and send email.

#5 No, e-smith is pretty darn secure out of the box. You would need to make some changes to get fine control over ports.

#8 Not in 4.0 but you can in 4.1. SSL is included.
