i-bays not visible in Windows
« on: November 17, 2001, 10:30:47 PM »
Hi,

I have set the workgroup to my windows workgroup and called the server "linux".
The Server linux doesn't appear in my network environment in the explorer.
Even connecting a network drive via explorer \linux\test where test is my i-bay doesn't work. Windows can't find the server and the share.

Bye,

What version of windblows are you using? If you are using WinMe, then you have trouble. You have to hand map the drive with this OS as the security protocol part of the TCP/IP stack in windowsMe is cracked and doesn't properly pass the password.

Bon Chance,
Ron

No, I'm not using ME, I'm using Windows 98 SE.
What could be the problem?

I am using Windows ME on several computers in my lan and all of them work fine with network shares.   (W2K has been a much bigger challenge)

The main thing is to ensure that on WIndows in
control panel --> network --> identifcation, that your workgroup is set correctly,
that File and Printer Sharing is installed, that TCPIP is bound to Client for Networks and File and Printer sharing, and that file sharing is ticked under
'File and Print Sharing', and that the primary network login is 'client for microsoft networks'.

Make sure you logon to the windows machine using a userid setup on the E-Smith machine (or logon as admin).

In the server manager under workground, Domain Master should be Yes.

Look in /var/log/samba for a log file that has the name of each windows client PC.
If not, then E-Smith and the clients are never talking.

I couldn't get my users to connect until I went back into the manager and activated the users passwords.
Open a user,  re-enter the user password, the activated users have a different color.
