set read-only & hidden bits on files from Windows client

I note that if you open a server text file's properties from a Windows client, set the archive, read-only and hidden bits, close the properties, then reopen the properties again, only the archive bit is changed. The other two do not change.

Is there a setting somewhere that affects this, or is this just a characteristic of Samba?

Well, a little more research shows that if the user has a login and password on the server, and uses them, then trying to set either the hidden or read-only file attributes returns an "access denied" error. Setting / unsetting the archive bit also gets an "access denied" error for a client logged in to the server, but just works if an "everyone" login is used.

This looks like a samba permissions error, somehow, but now I could use some advice as to what and how to fix (it).

Thanks.
