add win 2k server to e-smith
« on: December 13, 2001, 07:43:58 AM »
Hi all,

may i know is it possible to add win 2k server with sp2 to e-smith domain whereby e-smith server is the domain controller.

I follow the howto on adding win2k/xp machine but it prompts me RPC error. I check smbpasswd and passwd both has created an account for the win2k server.

Thanks

Hi,

Samba 2.2.2 (which is underlying SME 5.0 and should be with e-smith 4.1.2 after an Upgrade) does not support NT/w2k Servers as a BDC.

If there is a MS-Server in your LAN, it must (and should-) work as a PDC, because everything else would cause endless errors.

As far as i know (this question occured more often) MS-Servers can only work as a BDC (BackupDomainController), if there is another MS-Server in the Lan. And that is what you are trying to do.

Also there is an unsolved phaenomenon in my Lan, that Samba even fails some Access Operations on Samba, if there is any other MS-Server active in the lan (must be something around NETBIOS/´Browsing, i was not able to solve yet).

So you should better not waste any more time on that thing...

BK,

Yes, this can be done - but getting Win2k machines to connect to Samba can be a little tricky at times.

I'd go back and follow the HOW TO located here -

http://myezserver.com/docs/mitel/samba-upgrade-howto.html)

Make sure you follow the instructions....and also folow the troubleshooting.

Good luck,

Patrick

Alex I think you mis understood me. I am trying to join the W2K machine as an application server not as a pdc.

You have to join from the Windows-box (Network properties, Domain instead of Workgroup).
If you're using 5.1beta this works fine, as this matter has been dealt with.
So upgrade essg.
