XP not printing to SME 5.03
« on: January 02, 2002, 06:25:39 AM »
Greetings,

I'm running a SME 5.03 server, with a NEC superscript 1400 attached to its parallel port.

Printing from windows 98 and 2000 work fine.  However, after upgrading two separate workstations to XP, i've found that neither will print at all.

When I try to print a test page on both boxes, I get the following error:
"Test page failed to print. Would you like to view the print troubleshooter for assistance? Operation could not be completed"

When I try to print a test page from notepad, I get this error:
"the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect"
and on the other box:
"A StartDocPrinter call was not issued"

I've tried the default XP driver for the printer, and the 2000 driver from the NEC site, both with the same reactions.

The printer does show up fine on the network, and I'm successfully browsing files on the server, writing to the server etc.

Nothing shows up in /var/log/messages

Any suggestions?  Is anyone else having problems with XP printing?

OK, I've XP to print to SME 5.03.  Trick is to have the user account on the XP box mirror the username on SME.  Renaming an existing account won't work.

Once I created a new account with the same username as SME, and gave it the same password, I could successfully print, and get access to my home directories etc.

Feeling like a rookie...

There's an easier solution.  Simply map a network drive to the SME server and have it reconnect at login.  Once you've logged in, all services are available for that user, including printing.
