Hi,
It is maybe a little off topic, but ..
I have an E-Smith server and 5 Windows Pc connected to the server.
I would like to connect to one off the Windows Pc’s, by the Internet, and remote control it.
Is that possible, and what Software do I need?

Let me see if I understand.  You want to do a remote connection to a WinX box on your network from the Internet.

Assuming you have no firewall issues and the WinX boxen have real IP associated with them and are not NATed, it is relatively simple.

I am also assuming you wish to connect FROM an WinX box.  If so, either pcAnywhere or VNC will do the job.

The advantage of pcAnywhere is that it includes file transfers and scripting, but it costs money.  VNC is fast and free but is a remote control solution only and will not allow for scripting or file transfers.

If you want to connect FROM a *nix box, then your choice is much more limited, but VNC will still work.  You will need to be running an X session on the *nix box in order to have VNC control the WinX gui.

We use both PCA and VNC and are happy with them.

Do a Google search on VNC and it will come up as one of the very first entries.

No, just on the windows PC.

May I suggest 2 tricks :

1/ build a Vpn to get into your network, so you can take control of any inside PC without opening 5 ports on Sme.

2/ Use TightVnc, much faster than the original Vnc.

I agree about the VPN, I am using Remote adminisrator. I have tried all the others and have found nothing as fast. It's not free but I think it was only $30 or so.

All,

I installed TightVNC on a Windows 2000 server on my network behind my E-Smith server.. The client (vncviewer) works fine from within my network. To test remote access, I created a VPN PPTP connection on my W2k desktop and used a dial-up account to test access to the TightVNC server through the E-smith server, which is connected to the internet through an ADSL connection. This setup worked fine, also. However, when using a dial-up account off-site with a Windows ME machine, the VPN connects fine, but I cannot access the TightVNC server!

The E-Smith message log looks fine except for messages similar to the following:
Jan  6 09:57:34 gateway named[1588]: denied update from [192.168.77.67].1461 for "itlsys.com" IN
Jan  6 09:57:34 gateway named[1588]: denied update from [192.168.77.67].1466 for "77.168.192.in-addr.arpa" IN
......
Jan  6 10:27:17 gateway modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-108

Can anyone shed light on what these messages from named and modprobe mean, and could they be related to my problem?

You might consider TightVNC....more secure and faster, plus has a "best" compression that works much faster if a dialup line is involved.  I am currently switching all systems to tightvnc from winvnc.  TighVNC does work with WinVNC.  

A tip if you choose to Tight and Winvnc is already installed.......first remove the winvnc service in admin tools, then uninstall winvnc progrme, then install tightvnc.  I had problems when I just installed tightvnc without completely removing winvnc.

Yes, TightVNC is what I am using. Have you been able to access the TightVNC server from a remote network? Did you have to modify the configuration of the E-Smith server in any way?
